Every great event has its history, one of them is the Child's Lottery Draw, the second most important of those we celebrate every year, without a doubt one of the most popular and mediatic. Every January 6, at the end of the Christmas season, we celebrate this award. Do you want to know how it came about and why it is called that?
History of the Lottery of the Child
Although there is some mystery regarding the year in which the Extraordinary Child Draw was created, we can point to 1941 when it was institutionalized and carried out with great success among the public. In that year the draw consisted of four series of 42.000 tickets each, of which 166.668 tickets were sold with a collection of 25.230.000 pesetas.
It has rained a lot since then, and a lot has grown, because El Niño today distributes 700 million euros throughout Spain, with 50 series of 100.000 numbers each.

Why is the Child's Lottery called that?
The 'El Niño' draw, as we know it now, is named after the Duchess of Santona, María del Carmen Hernández and Espinosa de los Monteros, since he is considered to be the heir to the charity raffles he organized known as the National Children's Raffle.
Date of celebration of the Draw of Kings
The day of celebration of the Sorteo del Niño was traditionally January 5, on the eve of the feast of the Epiphany of the Lord or Adoration of the Magi. But since 2000 it was moved to the next day, January 6.
This change was made since it is a holiday, also to increase the popularity of the draw, in fact, it is almost a tradition to see its celebration while having the traditional Roscón de Reyes for breakfast.
Methodology of the Lottery of the Child
Unlike the Christmas Lottery, whose method used to extract the winning balls is the system of two drums, one for the balls and the other for the prizes, which means that the duration of this is quite long, in the Lottery of the Child a multiple drum system is used. A drum with 10 balls, from 0 to 9, for each of the five numbers that make up the tenth and another drum with the prizes.
If you are one of the lucky ones, win a prize from the Extraordinary Child Draw 2023, it is important that you remember that the maximum term to claim said prize is 90 days. This period begins to count the day after the draw.
